Use dimensions, not vague scale words
A cue such as long thin Roman brick or compact utility brick gives the model a clearer repeat rhythm than simply saying small.
Distribute weathering by course
One black brick or one large missing mortar patch becomes a landmark. Ask for restrained variation across many units.
Reserve depth for the joints
For a later height or normal map, mortar recession should stay shallow and consistent instead of becoming deep black outlines.
