Use these checks before exporting. The goal is a texture that still looks natural when repeated across a floor, wall, fabric sample, mockup, or 3D material.
Do not turn rust into metal
Rust and verdigris are surface compounds. In a PBR workflow they usually need a different metalness and roughness response from bare metal.
Match directional grain at both edges
Horizontal brushing is forgiving only when line density and brightness remain stable from the top edge to the bottom edge.
Keep damage below prop scale
Large dents imply a specific object. For a reusable raw material, prefer fine scratches and distributed wear without panel boundaries.

Why should a metal texture avoid strong highlights?
Highlights should respond to scene lights and environment reflections. A highlight baked into base color repeats as a fixed bright patch.
Should rust be marked as metallic?
Generally no. Treat rust, paint, and most surface deposits as non-metallic regions, then verify the result in your target PBR shader.
Which metal finish hides repetition best?
Fine bead-blasted or lightly brushed finishes are often forgiving. Large hammer marks, streaks, and isolated corrosion need more careful repeat checks.
