    Prepare the photo

    Crop a flat, front-facing, evenly lit material patch and remove large distractions.

  2. 2

    Repair the repeat

    Match left/right and top/bottom edges, then inspect a 3×3 repeat for seams and landmarks.

    Choose the maps

    Keep the channels your shader needs and set Metalness deliberately for metal or non-metal sources.

  4. 4

    Test in the engine

    Import the maps with the correct color-space settings and judge scale under scene lighting.

What each generated PBR map represents

The maps stay spatially aligned because they are derived from the same repaired tile. Their values remain estimates from one image, so use them as a starting point and validate the material under real scene lighting.

Source preparation

Prepare the photo before deriving maps

The generator can repair repeat boundaries, but it cannot recover physical material measurements that one uncontrolled photograph never captured.

    Shoot or crop straight on

    Avoid angled walls and floors. Perspective changes texture scale across the image and repeats that distortion.

  2. 02

    Use broad, neutral lighting

    Remove hard cast shadows, glare, bright hotspots, and strong directional gradients before map generation.

  3. 03

    Remove isolated landmarks

    Clone or crop outlets, screws, stains, large knots, deep cracks, and other features that reveal every repeated tile.

  4. 04

    Judge the repeated surface

    Inspect a 3×3 or 5×5 repeat before exporting maps; a clean single square can still form a visible grid.

Important limits

A fast material estimate, not measured capture

  • • The maps are not photogrammetry or physically calibrated scan data.
  • • Height is Beta and may interpret color changes as surface depth.
  • • Strong lighting, reflections, and perspective remain source-quality problems.
  • • Enlarging a low-resolution image does not create real missing material detail.
  • • Normal orientation and channel conventions must be checked in the destination shader.
  • • Production assets may still need Substance, Material Maker, Photoshop, or manual authoring.
